Plot
Samus Aran is sent on her first mission from the Federation Police in the year 20X5 to halt the illegal obtainment and containment of an unknown species found on SR388. The captives of these highly dangerous creatures are soon discovered as the Space Pirates. Samus's primary objective is to infiltrate a Space Pirate base and eliminate their leader, Mother Brain, who is directing the Space Pirates to their destinations where the mysterious bioforms are. Samus directs her course onto the planet Zebes to begin her first mission.

During the mission, Samus encounters and defeats the commanders of the Space Pirates, Kraid and Ridley in Brinstar and Norfair. She then advances deeper into the more dangerous regions of Zebes and into Tourian. In Tourian, Samus discovers the mechanical-enhanced supercomputer bioform Mother Brain. Using her large supply of Missiles, Samus eliminates Mother Brain's defenses and terminates Mother Brain herself. Not long after Mother Brain is defeated, a self-destruct sequence is activated as a last-minute plan to stop Samus from escaping the planet. Fortunately, Samus is able to elude the self-destruction triggered by Mother Brain's defense systems and escapes within three minutes.
